MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

J.R. Clisham (pictured above), owner of CT SELF STOR, sat down with the
Chamber to talk about the evolution of the storage industry and how he
incorporates Chamber membership into his business growth plan.
How long have you been in the storage business?
My father began in 1988. I was an attorney and in 2000 decided to leave that profession to join him in the storage business. Since then, I have become very active. I am the incoming President of the Connecticut Self Storage Association and sit on a planning committee for the National Self Storage Association.
You joined the Chamber to grow the Document Storage side of your business. What type of businesses need document storage? How does CT SELF STOR accommodate these customers?
All businesses store documents – Attorneys, Accountants, Doctors, etc. Many have an obligation to store certain records for up to 7 years. CT SELF STOR offers document storage at a fraction of what others do. Many competitors target big businesses that need services in addition to document storage. We offer a simplified approach to small businesses looking to free up space. If these customers need additional services, we are more than happy to accommodate, but don’t charge them for it on a monthly basis.
Tell us what the storage industry is up against today.
When people think of storage units – many envision a dark, garage like building that is meant for old furniture and unwanted items. CT SELF STOR works hard to break that stereotype. Our facilities are clean, well-lit, with state of the art video monitoring. Everything from climate controlled units to well-maintained landscaping is taken into consideration. Going as far as offering new customers a complimentary truck when they move in – that is what CT SELF STOR is all about.
How has the Chamber made a difference for CT SELF STOR?
I joined the West Hartford Chamber when my business opened to do what every good business person should - meet people, make connections, and increase my bottom line. The Chamber has been nothing but supportive. CT SELF STOR was the presenting sponsor at the Annual Golf Tournament this past September. I definitely believe that it helped brand my business within the West Hartford community. I look forward to future events and meeting more members.
What types of partnerships are you looking for from other Chamber members?
I am looking to connect with courier services, shredding services, and movers. These partnerships will help me offer add-on services associated with storage for those customers looking for them. It’s all about customer service.
What is your best advice to a new business owner, just starting out?
I stick to the philosophy of “Find something you love doing and find a way to make money”. I left my law career and dove into the self-storage industry – and I love my job. New business owners who follow that mentality won’t have a problem immersing themselves in their work. Get involved - associations and organizations (like the Chamber) help you make meaningful connections and eventually money. Definitely keep a sense of professionalism – even if you are your own boss. Customers look at your web site, your e-mail address, and marketing material so make sure it reflects your brand well.
